A huge cloud of dust rose and an overpass disappeared. This was the scene in ZhuzhouHunan Province on May 17.Nine people were killed and 16 injured.

Things were similar last year in the Sichuan earthquake.Thousands of people were buried in the ruins and lost their lives. What if we could have warned them?

People are always racking_their_brains to find a way of preventing buildings collapse.Better materials and technology helpbut they are not a solution.

Just like humansa building has its own life cycle from birth to deathIf we know when a building is going to collapsewe can repair it in advance or get out of it before it falls.

Nowscientists at the University of Illinois have developed a material that turns red before it breaks. The invention could be used in things like climbing ropes or bridge supports.

The research was led by Nancy Sottosa professor at the universitys Beckman Instituteand Douglas Davisa graduate research assistant.

The secret behind the colorchanging material is a type of molecule (分子)A molecule is a group of atoms held together by chemical bonds.Imagine you and your friends standing in a circleholding hands. Each person stands for one atomyour hands represent the bondsand the entire circle represents a molecule. If one person lets go of his or her handsthe molecule changes color.

The research team put the molecule into a soft material. When the researchers stretched the materialit turned bright red for a few seconds before it broke into two pieces. When they repeatedly stretched and relaxed the materialwithout breaking itit only turned a little red.

The major problem is that light can get rid of the red color. When the team shone bright light on the moleculethe broken bond was fixedand the color disappeared.

If the bright light keeps the red color from appearingthe materials warning system will be useless.Scientists still have a lot of work to do before the colorchanging molecules can be used outside the lab.

16What does the passage mainly introduce?

AThe collapse of an overpass in ZhuzhouHunan Province.

BThe Sichuan earthquake last year.

CA material that turns red before it breaks.

DA way of preventing building from collapsing.

17The underlined words racking their brains in the third paragraph mean ________.

Asuffering a lot

Bcollecting beyond imagination

Closing a lot

Dthinking very hard

18Which of the following is a WRONG statement?

AThousands of people died from the collapse of buildings in the Sichuan earthquake because they hadnt been warned.

BThere is no building that will never collapse.

CA new material has been applied to buildings to warn people of collapse.

DA colorchanging material can turn red before it breaks.

19What is the major problem in the research of the colorchanging material?

ABright light can get rid of the red color.

BWhen the material is relaxedthe color disappears.

CThe materials warning system is useless.

DThe molecules only change color in the lab.

20What can we infer from the passage?

AThe colorchanging molecules are certain to be used outside the lab.

BThere will be no collapse with the help of the colorchanging material.

CThere is a long way to go before the material can be applied.

DThe problem caused by bright light will be solved by scientists.

Attention deficit (不足) hyperactivity (活动过度) disorder is known by the letters AD.H.D.Children with AD.H.D.might have trouble paying attention. They might not seem to listen and might forget things. They might not be able to stay seated or play quietly. They might talk too muchact and speak without thinking about the results of their behavior. These are among the signs named on the website of Americas Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Doctors usually identify the disorder in children. But experts say the behaviors often last into adulthood.Researchers have been looking for the cause or causes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Now, a brainimaging study offers more evidence that could lead to new ways to treat it.Researchers say they observed shortages in the brains reward system in patients with AD.H.D..The study found that levels of some proteins were lower than normal.Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, says the lack of attention and selfcontrol that mark AD.H.D. could be caused by problem in the flow of dopamine(多巴胺). She says people might have difficulty completing an activity if they cannot expect some kind of reward in return. Researchers studied the pathways on which dopamine travels and AD.H.D. Doctor Volkow says the researchers then compared the pathways to those of 44 adults without the disorder. There is a lower concentration of dopamine markers in the brain of individuals with AD.H.D., specifically in the areas of the brain that are involved with reward and motivation. And the dopamine levels are directly linked to the severity of the patients inattention,”she says.

The study used brain images taken at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York State. Jack Wang is chairman of the Brookhaven medical department. He says the finding might also help explain why people with AD.H.D.are more likely to abuse drugs or overeat. He says they might be attempting to increase their dopamine levels to make up for the deficits in their reward system.(2011·合肥模拟)
